..it stopped my whining for a day...

I admit, I have a recurring complaint about this beautiful Southern California. Actually, I whine a lot about this----

...any time you choose to get away from it all and go somewhere "special" like a perfect beach, or a perfect campground, you must fight tooth and nail for a secluded spot to truly enjoy the atmosphere (and not the crazy people in their habitat).
If you get a tip on the radio or TV stating the promised Best Kept Secrets, you know that means your desired getaway is no longer desirable because 5 million people just got the same tip.My family and I were pleasantly surprised when we chose Friday to visit the snow since we were out of school and James took the day off. We drove 1 1/2 hours North to find snow. Mt. Pinos is at 8,800 feet. Long story short...the parking lot was nearly empty and we had the sledding hills to ourselves.
Very satisfying! Tempuratures were in the upper 40s, and despite the lack of snow gear for most of us, the sunny day was....awesome. Monica crashed badly into a tree. Jenna's toes got too cold--but what do you expect when you're wearing uninsulated rain boots?

I had to endure a mischievous 12-year-old trapped inside a 44-year-old body and become his moving target for the better part of the day.
I hope my girls remember this day as much as I will.

EDIT: James said, "Whats with the penguin?" Does anyone else need clarification regarding how close penguins congregate? Raise your hand...

Aaahh...fantastic!!! I'm so glad you took advantage of it. Sledding in 40 degrees is MY kind of sledding, or skiing for that matter. What a great day for your family!

Is there a mom in that family picture? I think there are five daughters and and one dad, you look younger every year Susan! It looks like you all had fun.

PS. Hey James, I was kinda lost on the penguin pics myself.

Awe, Mount Pinos!! We have been there before. It's a little over an hour for us!! We used to go and bring back snow and then have a snow ball fight in our front yard!! Boy, did that get a lot of strange looks from those driving by!! I'm happy for you that you got a snow fix!!! I got the penguins!!

This is darling! and so glad that you were able to enjoy it all to yourself. (I share your same complaint) I think the only boots Grace owns are rain boots as well. Snow is just frozen rain, so I think they are completely appropriate. Save that family shot for your '08 Christmas card!

Looks like you guys had a great time. I'm a slacker. I haven't taken the boys sledding yet and we LIVE where it snows!! Ok so I have a fractured ankle that won't heal...lame excuse! :)
I get the thing about penguins just for the record.

haha. My husband acts like a mischeivious 12-year-old in the snow, too. But I'd have to admit that I might be guilty of the same accusation, too. It was actually a snowball fight on our first date when our eyes locked and we just knew that there would be lots of snowball fights together in our future.:-)
